Abstract. In the paper corpus linguistics is viewed as a methodology and a way of linguistic analysis. The paper makes a brief survey showing that electronic corpora are the mainstay of the modern era and are a consequence of the com- puter revolution, beginning with the first computer corpora in the 1960s, such as the Brown Corpus and continuing to the present time.
The author also stresses the point that it becomes increasingly important that corpora are carefully created and selected so that analyzing them a researcher can be sure that the results of the analysis will be valid. The paper shows that corpora have been introduced now into different linguistic disciplines, and have succeeded in opening up new areas of research or bringing new insights to traditional research problems on the example of the concept “will/wish/desire” and linguistic means of representing the concept in English. The research method adopted for this analysis may be called corpus assisted and this is one of the first attempts to fuse it with cognitive and historic linguistics.
